Opening and Closing Circle

Updated: May 19

We started ÓS from our wish to better honor our time and energy together. And so, through the study of our cycles and patterns, we got to learn about the symbology of Circles and the ways in which they can be applied for the betterment of our relationships. Circles have transcended time and culture as a powerful symbol of unity, focus, and communication. Beyond their physical form, they can teach us deeper concepts:

  • Unity and Wholeness: The circle, with no beginning or end, represents a complete cycle. This can be seen as a metaphor for the flow of information and energy, constantly circulating and transforming within a group.

  • Cyclicality: Circles reflect the cyclical patterns of life, reminding us that communication is an ongoing process. How we interact in one moment impacts the next.

  • Infinite Potential: The circle, with no corners or edges, symbolizes limitless potential. This can inspire us to approach communication with creativity and open-mindedness.

  • Focus: The center of a circle can represent a focal point, reminding us to focus our energy on what truly matters in the conversation.

We connected this to the way we were communicating with one another.

We made "Opening and Closing Circle" a practice:

Its simple; we start by greeting each other, letting each other know how much time and energy we have, and most importantly, what we'd each like to get out of the conversation.

Opening & Closing Circle with Intention

Here's how we generally go about it:

Opening Circle

  1. We individually prepare our space with the tools that we think will aid us in our conversation. Likewise, storing things that might easily distract us is as effective as having what is useful.

  2. We share what we'd like to express as we begin. This way we make sure we're on the same page in regards to our time, energy levels, and the shared intention of our session.

Closing Circle

  1. We do a check-in 10-15 minutes before it's time to go.

  2. We share reflections and/or takeaways.

  3. We end the conversation by sharing about the next steps to take, notes of gratitude, etc.

The takeaways from our practice

This has made sense for us living in different countries with different time zones and schedules. When we get to see one another 1-1, we put our phones to the side and give each other our full presence.

This isn't something we practice all the time, but we've already experienced improvements in these areas:

Time:

We respect everyone's time and attention and give our full presence for the allotted time.

  • Especially as we take on more responsibilities and have to manage & communicate them with more people.

Energy:

We are more discerned with what we would like to share and talk about in our meeting together.

  • This helps us not get lost in tangents or focus on the wrong thing.

Communication:

The check-in allows us to understand the state of mind and considerations of one another.

Take only what may work for you and leave what doesn't.
