The Importance of Saying "No."

Updated: Nov 10

One of our favorite lessons comes from the origin of the word Virgin. Once a word used to describe a woman who was independent, untied, autonomous. Its current association disconnects it from a deeper wisdom. The Virgin as an archetype is someone who says no to what is not for them; so that they can say yes to the right thing. This teaches us to have discernment in our decisions, to think before we act, and to listen to our intuition. What should I be saying no to?

♍︎ Virgo The Constellation, Archetype, and Wisdom

Sixth sign of the Zodiac.

This archetype of the Mother, The Virgin, and the Maiden all speak to Virgos connection with Feminine Wisdom. Virgo is connected to the planet Mercury ☿ and The Moon ☾ linking it to both communication and Internal listening.

For many peoples from across the northern hemisphere this time of year marked the coming of the hard winter months. This prompted the harvesting of crops and urgent preparation.

Yet acting without thinking is what causes mistakes. We are taught to slow down and process and analyze our path ahead.

This middle point in the year is a great time to be with ourselves to think. Listening to our inner voice before taking action.

The symbolism of Virgo originates in ancient Babylon  (c. 3000 BCE), the constellation was linked to the deity of grain and harvest as the star grouping looked like an ear of wheat.

In Ancient Egypt; Virgo was linked to the goddess Isis, who was seen as the embodiment of fertility, motherhood, and the nurturer of life. Isis represents key embodied lessons such as resilience, maternal protection, and the balance of power and service.

The Greeks (c. 800 BCE) connected Virgo with Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, and Persephone, her daughter. This myth symbolized the seasonal cycle of growth and dormancy, with Virgo representing the time of harvest and abundance.

In Roman mythology (c. 300 BCE - 400 CE) , Virgo continued to be associated with Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, paralleling the Greek myths of Demeter and Persephone.

Virgo’s representation of purity, modesty, and service began to solidify, themes that carry into current astrological interpretations.

In Christianity, the birth of Jesus to a virgin in Bethlehem is symbolically connected to Virgo. In Christian countries this archetype became the Virgin Mary and La Virgen de Guadalupe.

In medieval and Renaissance astrology (5th–17th Century CE), Virgo became firmly established as one of the twelve zodiac signs, ruled by Mercury, it emphasizes intellect, communication, and organization.

The understanding of these archetypes support the spiritual progression of our consciousness.
